For Jeff Edelman, the path to progressive metal began with a single spark: Iron Maiden’s Seventh Son of a Seventh Son. That record’s layered storytelling and emotional depth became the DNA for his own work, later infused with the atmospheric influence of Pink Floyd, Tool, and The Cure.
Jeff’s songwriting process is less about clinical composition and more about rapid capture. He describes his music as arriving "fully formed"—beamed into his mind like a real-time transmission of melody, lyrics, and rhythm. To preserve these fleeting moments, Jeff has been known to go to extreme lengths for the right sound, including singing into a giant metal bucket to achieve the haunting, chanted textures found on the track "Theme of Circles."
"I think I would wither and die if I did not have a musical escape. I’d go mad with all the tunes in my head."
Jeff’s background is rooted in the tangible and the fantastical. After years spent in the construction industry—managing crews and shaping raw materials—he pivoted to a career that mirrors his love for immersive storytelling. Today, he is a full-time professional Game Master, running Dungeons & Dragons campaigns nearly every night of the week. This passion for lore and world-building flows directly into Wither’s thematic exploration of hope, light, and Lovecraftian mystery.
Born and raised in Escondido, Jeff’s musical origin began in high school jam sessions with lead guitarist Micah Cummins. Inspired by the "raw power" of his brother Keith’s early doom project, Obsidian, Jeff eventually joined forces with Keith to transform those early sessions into the foundation of Wither.
Though an introvert by nature, Jeff’s live presence is defined by high-stakes energy. His favorite memories include a legendary near-miss at The Whisky a Go-Go, where a leap off the drum riser nearly put him in the path of Keith’s spinning guitar.
"I hold on for dear life and hope for the best... though a shot of Grand Marnier before a show is a fine thing if it can be found."
Jeff views the bond between the band and the audience as the ultimate point of the creative process. His philosophy is summed up in his favorite Wither lyric:
"Clear the space for the task at hand, to leave in the past all the pain that has frozen us shut... With faith in the days to come, the shadows will be cast away."
To the fans, he offers a simple gratitude: “Thank you for being you and appreciating what we do. You give the whole thing a point.”
